We went through something like it before. You were impressed with Brand's ability to get all the girls, and I noted that his nymphomaniac behavior refuted the "soy boy" theory that meat is necessary for virility &/or sexual prowess, since Brand was a vegetarian since his teenage years and as far as I know is now vegan. I think you said it was Jesus I was jealous of for his lustrous hair, which is odd because we have no pictures of the man, so maybe he had a poof of kinky-curly hair or was even bald. He might've been pushing fifty (John 8:57).

At this point I'm neutral on Brand. I liked him better when he was a superficial limp-wristed hetero cad, swanning around and flipping his long hair and being friends with Morrissey. I'm unimpressed with his transition into "heterodoxy" and what looks like a goofy spirituality-and-conspiracy-theory grift. But congratulations to Rusty Rockets, I guess. He's been washed clean by the blood of the lamb.

If you mean morality is a little calculator that can't go into debt then I agree that love overcomes it. But the moral life still has dignity. I don't accept the "I was an artist" justification for wrongs. It tends to mean "I had power, but I hurt others when I exercised it for myself".

That is not what I said, but that's okay: I misrepresented caramel sea salt recently so it's only right I get a taste of my own medicine. My comment was merely that it would've been strange for Jesus (if he was a radical socialist, as Chris Hedges thinks he was) to insist on using money for his own glorification instead of helping the poor. Personally I don't like the common complaint that the Vatican should melt down all its liturgical gold and give it to the poor. The efforts of Christians to give aesthetic glory to God over the ages are not nothing to me. If we followed the Judases to their logical conclusion, we would have to live in a drab commie state and spend all our time toiling on behalf of the poor and never making any art, and I think that would be a soulless world to live in. We wouldn't have cathedrals or plainchant or Renaissance paintings or John Betjeman.

Just to give Nietzsche his due, he doesn't say "what is truth?" is the ultimate maxim to live by. Anyone who did would be paralyzed with extreme skepticism. He just says it's a very wise question to ask when confronted by the lunatic truth claims in the gospels, as well as for Pilate to have asked when confronted with Jesus. Making an infallible idol of a revealed supernatural "truth" is dangerous, as religious history bears out. People are passionate about a lot of mutually exclusive texts—and even the conflicting interpretations of those texts.
