Jesus of Nazareth, known as "J-dogg" by some

What is your opinion of Jesus?

i think audrey is jealous of R dogg because he has a luscious head of hair and manly chest and gets all the girls! (i may have said this before, i cant remember)

We went through something like it before. You were impressed with Brand's ability to get all the girls, and I noted that his nymphomaniac behavior refuted the "soy boy" theory that meat is necessary for virility &/or sexual prowess, since Brand was a vegetarian since his teenage years and as far as I know is now vegan. I think you said it was Jesus I was jealous of for his lustrous hair, which is odd because we have no pictures of the man, so maybe he had a poof of kinky-curly hair or was even bald. He might've been pushing fifty (John 8:57).

At this point I'm neutral on Brand. I liked him better when he was a superficial limp-wristed hetero cad, swanning around and flipping his long hair and being friends with Morrissey. I'm unimpressed with his transition into "heterodoxy" and what looks like a goofy spirituality-and-conspiracy-theory grift. But congratulations to Rusty Rockets, I guess. He's been washed clean by the blood of the lamb.

so many good lines! thanks for this!!

i also like: Many sins are forgiven her, because she hath loved much. thats just proof of Jesus' amorality. he knows that love, which is not moral, trumps morality.
Thanks NWL, that "she has loved much" anointing section Luke 7:44-50 (equivalents in the other Gospels) is so sensuous!
thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head. Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet. My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment.
This is the only time Jesus is recorded as being anointed, which is necessary for a king and a priest (Messiah means "anointed one"). Some (eg Judas, Lucifer Sam) complain this perfume could've been used for the poor. JC replies they won't have him around for long- anointing is also for burial of a body. Anyway every line has books written on it and I could blather all night...
If you mean morality is a little calculator that can't go into debt then I agree that love overcomes it. But the moral life still has dignity. I don't accept the "I was an artist" justification for wrongs. It tends to mean "I had power, but I hurt others when I exercised it for myself".
i always liked Let the bury the dead, but what does it mean exactly??
Luke 9:60- don't wait to follow Jesus. JC asks someone to folllow him and gets told that he has to bury his father first.
I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.
Acts 9:5 this is when Saul/Paul is converted on the road to Damascus. Jesus is referring to oxen being kept in check by a goad or harness with metal spikes at the end. If they struggle and kick they only pierce themselves. My reading is it means that the more Saul had been doing wrong (hunting down Christians) and struggling against his better instincts, the more painful it became for him.

The language is so rich, real and physical. If you had to choose living by this stuff or "what is truth", which would you choose? Audrey trumpets the fact that people interpret the passages differently. People are rightly passionate about these texts, because they change the way we live.

That is not what I said, but that's okay: I misrepresented caramel sea salt recently so it's only right I get a taste of my own medicine. My comment was merely that it would've been strange for Jesus (if he was a radical socialist, as Chris Hedges thinks he was) to insist on using money for his own glorification instead of helping the poor. Personally I don't like the common complaint that the Vatican should melt down all its liturgical gold and give it to the poor. The efforts of Christians to give aesthetic glory to God over the ages are not nothing to me. If we followed the Judases to their logical conclusion, we would have to live in a drab commie state and spend all our time toiling on behalf of the poor and never making any art, and I think that would be a soulless world to live in. We wouldn't have cathedrals or plainchant or Renaissance paintings or John Betjeman.

Just to give Nietzsche his due, he doesn't say "what is truth?" is the ultimate maxim to live by. Anyone who did would be paralyzed with extreme skepticism. He just says it's a very wise question to ask when confronted by the lunatic truth claims in the gospels, as well as for Pilate to have asked when confronted with Jesus. Making an infallible idol of a revealed supernatural "truth" is dangerous, as religious history bears out. People are passionate about a lot of mutually exclusive texts—and even the conflicting interpretations of those texts.

I started this thread with a picture of a bearded, long-haired apocalypticist, so I'll end my participation with another.

Am I a cynic for thinking Brand’s baptism is about damage limitation? Numerous allegations of sexual assault do tend to bring on sudden attacks of Christianity!

I’ve been nagging you, Aubs, but it’s been an interesting thread.

Are you still looking for a Muslim country to move to? You could move to Sweden! Many brothers in faith, many pro-Palestine manifestations to attend, and the chicks all look like Amber Heard (and would probably appreciate a knowledgeable American contrarian)!

Well, I guess that is the cynic’s way of thinking. But sometimes cynics are right. Maybe it is about damage limitation, maybe it isn’t. No windows into men’s souls and all the world’s a stage etc Guess we’ll never know for sure. 😇

Rifkie… have you ever had a crush on a man that isn’t a murderer, sex pest, or an illegal
Immigrant?
Your a very strange individual at best.

AND DONT EVEN MENTION THEM TWO WASHED UP OLDE POP STARS FROM
THE 1890s 👩🏻‍🦼👨🏽‍🦯

It baffles me that some people think someone just wrote the Bible. If that were the case, exactly who is this Shakespeare level genius who wrote it and why has no one ever heard of him???

With my luck, I'd end up renting the apartment right beneath Samsa's, and he'd be blasting MJ at all ungodly hours. I'd thud on the ceiling with a broom, hollering "turn that shit down!" and he'll yell back "I'm not taking orders from a black-clad 14-yr-old atheist!"

It looks like Sweden is only 5% Muslim and, worse, the government supports Israel. Le Monde tells me: "for many years, the Scandinavian kingdom had been one of the Western countries most committed to the Palestinian cause, but since the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7, the country, now governed by the right, has shown almost unwavering support for Israel." Boo hiss.

The most famous Swedish convert to Islam was the artist Ivan Aguéli, an anarcho-esoteric Sufi Muslim who at a glance seems pretty great. He was friends with the French vegetarian activist Marie Huot and once fired shots at a matador to protest bullfighting. This is good to have learned. Now I know what kind of Islam to take up: the Islam of Ivan Aguéli. Ideally I would move to a European/American expatriate community in Indonesia and frequent a Dutch-colonial salon where all the bohemian Muslim converts come together to waste their afternoons drinking tea, smoking hashish, and grumbling with resentment towards the West. Aguéli was a handsome fellow (he could almost be Amber Heard's cousin) and his art is not bad either.
