Has Morrissey played in Grand Rapids?

Has Morrissey ever played in Grand Rapids, Michigan and if so, when ?

I live in Ontario and I truly wish he would play there as I know I'll probably never see him play in Canada.

Re: Has Morrissey played in Grand Rapids ?

since it's really easy to simple post a link to that site,
i checked for you.

i didn't see any Grand Rapids shows.

closest maybe Detroit

Re: Has Morrissey played in Grand Rapids ?

i know he played ann arbor and kalamazoo in 97 'but i dont think he has played in grand rapids.

Re: Has Morrissey played in Grand Rapids ?

I can't quite remember but if memory serves I think he did play Grand Rapids in 1992-- or maybe it was just that he did a store signing there. I know because it was covered by MTV. (I'm pretty sure it was Grand Rapids. It was some out of the way place in Michigan.)

Re: Has Morrissey played in Grand Rapids ?

i remember, i think it was the ann arbor show he came out for the encore in a michigan swimming t shirt.i think,do not hold me to that.

i should go and consult passions to see if i am right, but i am too lazy.:p

Re: Has Morrissey played in Grand Rapids ?

He did an appearance in Grand Rapids, years ago. (It's somewhere on You Tube). Not sure about a show, though.

I don't know all of the places he has played here in Michigan over the years. But I hear the Smiths once played in Royal Oak*

I know he played The Palace in Auburn Hills during Your Arsenal, cause I was there. He had a sold out show in Ann Arbor last year (which I missed because of the birth of my son, dammit) and then Royal Oak on Oct 19 of last year which was HEAVEN. Completely made me even more of a fan, if possible.

*He did mention this on stage when I saw him in Royal Oak last year, in the same venue, actually

The exact setlist is unknown but the above songs are confirmed. Chances are the setlist was identical to that of the previous how or the next.
Security had to line up on stage because fans were absolutely rabid. In "Panic" Morrissey changed a line to "Panic on the streets of Detroit", which probably was less an adaptation of the song's lyrics to the location than a nod to David Bowie's "Panic In Detroit".

There are no recording of this concert in circulation at this point in time.

I'd love to see him at The Fox - beautiful building, very ornate.

This concert sold out very quickly, within an hour all tickets were taken. The promoters probably could have filled a bigger venue. Morrissey was in great spirits, he growled and roared some of his lines and moved a lot. His band members were also in the best of moods. Many fans successfully made it on stage. Two of them even got to sing backup vocals on "Sing Your Life". Another one handed Morrissey a necklace which he kept staring at and pushing away until he finally decided to take it.
After "King Leer", Morrissey teased someone by saying "Shshshake it baby!" After "November Spawned A Monster", when the fans were cheering, he booed and then started "Thank you... this song..." but never finished what he meant to say. Instead he hummed a few bars of a melody until the band launched into "Will Never Marry". After "Our Frank" Morrissey thanked the fans and once again looked as if he wanted to say something, but didn't. Finally, returning for the encore, before "Everyday Is Like Sunday", he did it again: "If... if I can just say a words...".

An audience recording of the whole concert is circulated on bootleg cds as well as MP3 files on the internet. The quality of the recording varies from average to very poor.

That's the year I latched on to him. Senior in High School. No chance of going. Depressed. Meadowbrook is a nice venue, too.

For a third concert in a row, there were microphone problems. Morrissey had to stop singing during some numbers such as "November Spawned A Monster", "Sister I'm A Poet" or "Suedehead." In the latter case, the crowd sang the words to the song while Morrissey mimed them. As if this wasn't enough, security was very brutal. Fortunately, despite all this, Morrissey was very well received by the Detroit fans.
Morrissey's only significant banter of the evening came after "We'll Let You Know" when he complained "I'd just like to say that... I hope the sound isn't too awful from where you're standing, because from up here it's very very difficult".

A very poor audience recording of the full concert minus the first song is circulated on the internet.

I was there! Gallon Drunk opened. And they are very right about the sound. That's a bad concert venue. Plus I was up in the nosebleed section. I remember thinking that, this being my first exposure to other Moz fans other than the two I went with (pre-internet for me, folks), I really liked the crowd. They had a nice vibe. My main memory is that Moz was beautiful. I should dig out my old journals. Or maybe not.

This was a great, but rather uneventful concert if compared to other dates from this tour. Morrissey and his musicians seemed all in great spirits. The audience was rather subdued at the beginning but gradually warmed up as it was teased by Morrissey. Many fans invaded the stage during the encore of "Shoplifters Of The World Unite".
The setlist was significantly resequenced, and in the process, "Sunny" and "Wide To Receive" were dropped to make place for the returning "Maladjusted" and "Nobody Loves Us".

Entering stage, Morrissey shouted a jolly "Kalamazoo yahoo!" and shortly after added: "I feel very good!". Just before "Roy's Keen" he had to mention "By the way, we come from England". After "Satan Rejected My Soul", which stirred the crowd into action, Morrissey said "I'd like to thank you for coming tonight... (cheers) it means a lot, so thank you..." Then after "Paint A Vulgar Picture" he asked "Is it too loud?" and was loudly answered in the negative by the audience. Returning after a short break to perform the encore, Morrissey shouted "Thank you Kalamazoo... you are sssexy!".

A fair audience recording of the full concert is circulated among collectors of bootlegs on cd. Different transfers of this recording are available on the internet, some of better quality (FLAC from master) than others (MP3 via tape).

At this point, my two Moz friends had moved away and boyfriend (now Husband) was not a fan and refused to go and I was too stupid and afraid to go alone.(

Overall the band and Morrissey were jubilant and so was the audience. Approximately ten fans made it on stage. "Nobody Loves Us" was replaced in the setlist by "The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get". "Sunny" was on the set list but it was skipped.
For some reason Morrissey welcomed the crowd with "Hello Manchester!" and after "Billy Budd", he continued "Thank you Manchester". He never explained why he greeted the audience that way, but after Speedway he said "You can stop booing me, I know this isn't Manchester, and I'm very glad". Besides the above his only significant banter was the introduction of Satan Rejected My Soul" with "and now for the serious stuff".

Morrissey made many of the usual lyric changes and added a few more. In "Alma Matters" he sang "its my fist to ruin my own way". In "Reader Meet Author" he changed a line to "you don't know a thing about my life" and another one to "If a fight broke out here tonight, I'd be the first away because I'm that type".

Morrissey came back on stage for the encore in a Michigan Swimming t-shirt. He would use it as an inspiration for his own "Morrissey Swimming" shirt added to the merchandise table later in the tour.

This concert was a success. Morrissey was in good spirits, energetic and talkative, even when beer was thrown at him or when he was being heckled (read further). The audience was very receptive and quite a few fans successfully made it on stage. The first one to make it there was called a "brave boy" by Morrissey. The drum kit still said "Semisorry", an anagram of Morrissey's name. The setlist was almost the same as the one from the night before, but "Alma Matters" was reinstated to bring its length back to 17 songs.
New walk-on music was introduced on this date. For the first time Morrissey and his band came on stage to the James Bond theme instead of the drum intro from "The Operation". This would remain until the end of this tour. Morrissey's opening line was "We're cheap... we're British... we smell... and we're all yours!". After set opener "A Swallow On My Neck" he said "nice to see your (?) cheeks..." After "I Am Hated For Loving" he teased the audience and when they reacted, he said "Yes, I can hear you!".

At the end of "Ouija Board, Ouija Board" someone threw a glass of beer on stage and Morrissey was splashed with some of it. This prompted him to comment "Do you have anything better?... I never feel welcome 'til somebody throws beer at me... and that goes for wherever I go: the supermarket, church... the stage is really slippy now so I can't move around, which is horrible, but thank your friend! And if you're stood next to the person who threw it, please throw something at him or her..."

In "Billy Budd" Morrissey updated a line to "now it fifty years on". He also sang "so what! they turned me down". The Smiths' "Is It Really So Strange?" was introduced with the line "This is for all those of you who are old and clever swines, you're stood at the back and reading... we remember you..." After the song he thanked the audience and when they cheered back he emphasized "Oh no, thank you!"

After "Lost" Morrissey shouted "Oh for God's sake!" in a rough voice as an answer to someone heckling him. Besides all the new changes in the new slow acoustic arrangement of "Now My Heart Is Full" he also sang "I just can't explain so why should I try to". After the song he cryptically said "When I told you we would teethe... well we've more teeth than we even imagined when I said we would teethe..." He then offered someone the microphone: "Would you like the microphone?"

After "The Teachers Are Afraid Of the Pupils" Morrissey teased "It must be absolutely horrible to be known as hockey-town..." To someone who answered back he replied with the question "Could you say that slowly?" Not straying from the subject, he changed a line in "Half A Person" to "Sixteen, clumsy and shy, I went to Detroit and I..." After the song he joked "The only difference is, you probably haven't noticed but... I'm no longer 16... (in a little girl voice) I'm 17!... Oh God..."

After "Boxers" Alain started to say something into his microphone and Morrissey said "Alain would like to say a few words, but he doesn't know any..." He then told the audience "You don't have to clap everything you know, if we play something that you don't like, you know, tell us..." When he thanked the audience after "Tomorrow" he extended it with "all of you!". When a fan shouted something to him about flowers, he replied "They're not my flowers!... only flowers..." During the break halfway into "I Can Have Both" he said "I told you!"

After changing into a West Ham Boys Club t-shirt Morrissey asked "I suppose you have no idea what West Ham means, really... No!... Somebody say no!?..." He then followed this with the introduction for "Meat Is Murder": "This song is called 'Burger Off'!" After the song he added "So the moral is... the next time somebody tries to drag you into Murder King, Just! Say! No!" After "Hairdresser On Fire" he teased "I always keep my word, whoever gets the t-shirt can have me... which is hysterically funny..." After "Alma Matters" he joked "And if you know what that song means, please telephone 1-800-962... it's (?)..." Before going into encore "Shoplifters Of The World Unite" he declared "In our cheap British hearts, we love you..."

A fair audience recording of the complete concert is circulated on bootleg compact discs, sometimes with artwork under the titles "Detroit 2000" or "We're All Yours". This is also circulated in digital format on the internet, in at least two different transfers of similar quality. It must be said that one of these has some of Morrissey's banter edited out.

I love reading all this banter.....

This concert went without a hitch, but it wasn't the best of the tour. Morrissey was in an apparent sombre mood and slightly less talkative than usual. He voiced his dissatisfaction about a few things such as the crowd's lack of enthusiasm and the sound, although everything sounded fine from the audience's angle. Security was very tight and only a few fans made it on stage despite many attempts. The 18-track setlist was very similar to the one from the previous night in Milwaukee. The only change was the replacement of "Don't Make Fun Of Daddy's Voice" with "How Can Anybody Possibly Know How I Feel".
As he came on stage Morrissey greeted the audience with the line "I know I should be dead, but here I am in Detroit..." After set opener "How Soon Is Now?" he extended it with "Good evening to you... We're here to ruin your night, just give me time..." Then after "First Of The Gang To Die" he added "This of course is Morrissey in a state, at the State... nothing really changes as the years go by... except some of you get fatter..."

Besides the numerous lyric changes in "November Spawned A Monster", such as the recent "Jesus made me so... save me from pity, sympathy and idiots discussing me, yes I am a freak, and nothing can make good of all the bad that's been done", Morrissey also pulled a new one which he would reuse often on the remainder of this tour: "I am a symbol of where sex-craved lovers must always draw the line". Next up "I Like You" was introduced with the line "And this is rap from our 'You Are The Quarry' album and it's called... it's called 'I Like You'."

After the latter number Morrissey asked his most dedicated fan "Julia, any traveler's tales? Any traveler's tale? (he hands her the microphone and she congratulates him on his latest single making the top 10 in England) Oh stop it Julia! I can't deny it's true though..." He followed this with a story: "So today we stopped in a truck stop which I think was in Saginaw Bay and... but as soon as we saw the locals we jumped back in the bus... You know why!" After "Bigmouth Strikes Again" he mentioned his opening artist: "We hope you enjoyed the songs of Damien Dempsey... he's a handsome devil!... to some of you... I only know that because you told me..."

"How Can Anybody Possibly Know How I Feel?" was then introduced with the quick "This is also from 'You Are The Quarry'." After the song Morrissey proceeded with the introduction of his band: "Could I please introduce you to the boys who must be obeyed... the sensational Boz Boorer... the inimitable Gary Day... the extremely mighty Deano... beyond belief, Jesse Tobias... and a part of a man - a man of many parts, Mikey V Farrell... and as for me, well..." Following "Munich Air Disaster 1958" he explained why the sound problems were forcing him to stand away from the front of the stage "When I stand here my head blows off so that's why I'm standing back, 'cause it's just... (fan shouts for him to fix it) Fix it? Anybody have a ssssscrewdriver? (then to someone else) What's wrong with your throat?"

Dark reflections were also part of the banter. Following "Such A Little Thing Makes Such A Big Difference" Morrissey asked the audience "Are you all happy to be alive? (crowd cheers) Have you considered the alternative? (crowd falls silent)..." The Smiths classic "Shoplifters Of The World Unite" was followed with the comment "...which was from an album called 'Louder Than Bombs'... which I really enjoyed..." After the line "I will die with both of my hands untied" in "Irish Blood, English Heart" Morrissey exclaimed "I hope, anyway, I can't know really..."

Newest single "Let Me Kiss You" was introduced by Morrissey with the words "And of course, as Julia told you, we are #8 in the British charts which... which considering the fact that even after 100 years of making music nobody will play it still... you know they're not quite convinced yet... so I'll just hang on for another 100 years and... maybe... by which time of course we'll all be dead... but me, (in a suave voice) I'm timeless..." After the song he asked "Now tell me something please... Am I mistaken, or can I smell frying bacon? Can anybody smell that? Where is it coming from? Is it coming from the bar? Next door? Why, what's next door? What's next door? Really? Well which leads us, very eloquently, to 'The World Is Full Of Crashing Bores'..."

The latter number must not have been received too well by the audience because after its performance Morrissey said "Well every song can't be a zinger..." He then voiced his dissatisfaction at the sound once again: "...and if I stand here my head still blows off so... it's not because you got body odor or anything... although I'm sure some of you have, by the law of averages..." Following "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me" someone welcomed Morrissey to Hockeytown and the man replied "What's that highly intelligent statement from the middle of the hall? What was it? Welcome to what? I don't understand... Do you understand Julia? No? Obviously all fans of the Pistons... the Sex Pistons!"

In "I Have Forgiven Jesus", Morrissey changed one line to "by Sunday this life has screwed me." After the song he was successful in getting a reaction out of the audience with the question "Are you still there?". Before going into main set closer "You Know I Couldn't Last" he thanked the crowd and quoted from his own song "I Won't Share You": "Well thank you for being patient... Love tends to come and go, but that's okay, just as long as you know..."

In "You Know I Couldn't Last" Morrissey extended a line to "The critics who cannot break you, they somehow help to make you, which is shit, really!". His final words before going into encore "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" were "Thank you for being so nice... I have been too..." He extended the very first line of the song to "take me out, tonight, please!". Then someone tried to get on stage and failed, but was rewarded by Morrissey with a "nice try, very nice try!" Another one was successful and Morrissey told them "What kept you? What kept you?"

Two audience recordings of the complete set are circulated on compact discs and in digital format on the internet. Both are of quite good quality. If one must choose between the two, the one credited to recorder V.Ga. is perhaps slightly clearer than the one credited to Ry.Jo, but unfortunately it lacks the first few bars of "You Know I Couldn't Last. The V.Ga recording is sometimes seen with artwork under the creative title "Live In Detroit 10-17-2004".

I was really depressed at missing this sold out show. And then miraculously Royal Oak was announced and I FINALLY convinced the husband to go with me. Now I've made him promise that if Moz tours again we will see him. Repeatedly. And he agreed. The power of Moz live, y'all. Some people have to see it to believe it.

Royal Oak, Fri. Oct. 19, 2007:

Some quips that I remember: He mentioned that Kid Rock was on the cover of Rolling Stone (cue The World is Full of Crashing Bores).

He asked if we had seen Ellen "Degenerate" crying on her show about that puppy debacle (in the news). He said that the matter had been resolved, and Ellen had to be put down.

Encore: "Earlier I asked you to stop me and you didn't. So now you get THIS" (cue First of the gang)

"Well, it's Friday night where else would we be?"

He ripped off his shirt at the end and did that muscle man arms in the air thing as he walked off stage. *swoon*

He wore a white shirt and a black shirt and looked stunning.

So did any of you make any of these shows? (There were more than I thought, when I started flipping through Passions). What were your thoughts? This was fun.... Now I'm done ;)
