Mark E Smith RIP

RIP you crazy bastard

UPDATE Jan. 27:

Perhaps someone has more details on the influence of The Fall on Morrissey. I recall songs from The Fall were played as intermission music before Morrissey shows (according to this YouTube playlist, "Living Too Late" in 2017 and this playlist, "Lie Dream of a Casino Soul" in 1995). Also, this excerpt posted by Uncleskinny from "The Rise, The Fall, and The Rise" by Brix Smith Start (original article from Oct. 2016):

Mark had been losing patience with Rough Trade and decided we had to look for a new record label. There were a few reasons Mark had soured on them, but the main one was that The Smiths had arrived. This was a huge bone of contention. When he was younger, Morrissey used to write Mark long, fawning letters. Mark has them all saved. Morrissey was obsessed with The Fall and Mark. Mark would never call him Morrissey and would refer to him by his first name, Steven. The rumour was that they named themselves The Smiths after Mark, and that they loved The Fall so much they wanted to be on Rough Trade. One of their first gigs was supporting us.
...
It never even dawned on me that our smoking may have set off the alarm. As we were hurrying down the stairs to evacuate the hotel I ran into Morrissey. By this point I was having a full-blown anxiety attack, bordering on panic. The alarm was blaring and I was desperate to find Mark. I asked him, ‘Have you seen Mark?’ Morrissey responded in a dry, mean tone: ‘He’s probably upstairs, burning up in the fire.’ He thought it was funny, but I had no sense of humour right then. I was really worried about Mark’s wellbeing. I never spoke to Morrissey again. He was always so unfriendly, prickly and weird, whereas Johnny Marr was the loveliest, most friendly, genuine person.

Also, The Fall are #8 in Morrissey's Headful Of Heroes (NME, Sep. 16, 1989) - "Moanchester, so much to answer for":

No horses here.
It is even impolite to have this discussion here.
It is perfectly OK to dislike a group. It is perfectly OK to say it. It's just that when the singer of such group has died a few days ago and there is a thread about such thing and people trying to bring good memories about such person, it is extremely impolite to post that you don't like his band. It is a matter of context. It is a matter of respect. I assume that a LOT of persons on the forum do not like The Fall... I do not see the need to express that feeling in a thread that is dedicated to remembering what an artist has done during his life.

I agree with what you're saying, but :lbf: I was actually tickled that gordyboy9 would post that, it just makes the Fall that much more lovable! And it's always nice to know where people stand by their musical.. choices, tells a lot, usually.

You are kooky, but in a lovely way. There should be more Suns!
Yes, it is possible to know a lot about a person simply by knowing the kind of music he likes.

I simply have this weird tendency to believe that the world could be more civilized (though that's not the right word).

'My family's a weird lot
My stepsister's got a horrible growth
Listens to all this muzak shit
Reads Smash Hits while she's eating her tea
To me it sounds like bad CB'

I do not know the reason, but I am crazy for their cover of Lost in Music... and I do not even like the original song.

The universal jargon of the birds.

The phrase RIP is Christian terminology, and it is used to indicate that the deceased died in the peace of the Church, that is, united in Christ. Not sure it's particularly apt in this case, and it's certainly inappropriately used in this modern age when the majority of people have no belief in any of these man-made Gods. How about, "Mark E Smith has died - crazy bastard".

RIP (rest in peace) is not about the peace of the church, it's about the peace of your soul after death if you believe in its trascendence, no matter your religion or if you are religious or not. The fact the existence of the soul has not been scientifically proved (yet) doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
Bastard may seem funny, except for those whose parents were not married in holy marriage and so their children were segregated and called bastards by the church and the old legal institution, not too much time ago. Usually they where separated from their parents and lost all their family rights and the possibility of the normal family life they deserved. Being defenseless kids, they were considered as second rate citizens, just for the lack of the blessing of the church of the union of their parents. Being considered a bastard ruined the life of wonderful people who were not guilty of the label which fell upon them. The so called bastards were discriminated and usually abandoned by their biological parents. The church hierarchy owes them an apology if it's true they actually follow the true teachings of Christ.

yesterday morning at Match of the Day,[FA cup] they ended with a RIP and a clip where Mark is doing comments on a soccer match, thanks BBC great treat to honour Mark E Smith

I saw this quote floating round Twitter and am not sure of the legitimacy. As it's not from the official Morrissey account and I can't find it anywhere other than the Blue Rose Society twitter I was wondering if anyone has seen this or can verify it?

"Mark E. Smith could never be explained so he was never in the mainstream. The Hip Priest was too far ahead of the music journalist and they do not like that."

They are saying Morrissey said it but I can't find a source.

Thanks I'm a big fan of The Fall and The Smiths fan but I realise it's a bit strange that no official accounts have quoted this.

Um...got a pinch of salt handy?
The quote is attributed to Morrissey when he was pretending to be someone on Twitter called 'Dawn Mist' talking to the Rat character.
You won't find those words anywhere else.
I will leave it to others to 'explain' the reasons to be skeptical of that site.
They clearly liked each other (as per my Salford Lads club pic of Mark turning up there to celebrate This Charming Man's anniversary).
Regards,
FWD.

Just in case anyone missed this:

How could FWD possibly know it is fake, unless FWD is Morrissey, which he/she obviously isn't.

I can assure you that it is 100% genuine. The twitter account @DawnTheSecond is Morrissey, although if you choose not to believe it, that is entirely your prerogative....but please don't state that it is fake unless you actually know that as a fact.

In FWD's defence, he/she didn't say it was fake, they said take it with a pinch of salt. My advice would be to find out for yourself. Interact with Dawn on Twitter & see what you reckon. I've been interacting for 6+ years and have get a blog (FollowingTheMozziah.blogspot.com), so I know what I think/know.

Honestly, take a good long look at yourself.

Thank you for your advice, I have just spent the last three hours standing naked in front of the full length mirror in my bedroom...I like what I saw, although I must admit, it's all looking a little older.

Check out the Dawn twitter account for yourself rather than just presuming.

Does this lead to that fantasist site where we can read information about how you emotionally torment vulnerable women and make up lies about other Morrissey fans and Morrissey himself?

Going to keep generating your fake quotes to suck a few more in right, Wratten?

Shame I'm posting this after the Blue Rose fantasist but here's a rather erudite article about Morrissey and MES similarities and differences as realised in 1988 after the releases of Viva Hate and The Frenz Experiment.

Simon Reynolds is an interesting critic/ writer on pop culture although I wouldn't want to get stuck in a lift with him
