POLL for Americans regarding The Smiths

> What year did you first discover The Smiths?

1986, Yeah I know it was near the end but I was only 11.

> What year did you first discover The Smiths?

well, i am brazilian... so i am american too.

i discovered smiths circa 85-86. But i didn't understand the lyrics then... just when i understood his lyrics in 1991 i became a "real" fan.

> What year did you first discover The Smiths?
1986. I was working in a musical instrument retail store and we listened to a radio station that played The Smiths a lot! Oh the good old days... when the Pittsburgh area had a good radio station...

Me too. I bought a national magazine, with an article about a british band named The Smiths, from Manchester. The head lines: "MORRISSEY-- A TORMENTED BRITISH SOUL?" The Smiths came to my life in the right time, since I used to feel absolutely lost, and Moz lyrics were a kind of medicine for me during very hard moments of my life. Then I used to cut my hair like Morrissey's, and wear t-shirts with their albums on it. it was a long time ago. I remember one of his old interviews. The journalist came into his apartment, the door was open, and he found Morrissey wearing a tutu, jumping on his bed, singing "some girls are bigger than others"... When Morrissey noticed the presence of the journalist in the door, he said: "If you publish this, I'LL KILL YOU!!"

DON'T ASK ME IF THIS IS TRUE, I just have read this.

The Smiths were my grandparents their last name was Smith)! I thought any group with such an ordinary name couldn't be worth listening to. Was I wrong! I adore The Smiths!

Oh God, I really love them too!!!!!! God bless their genius!

How about, how old were you when you discovered The Smiths/Moz?

We were all about 16 or 17 right?

why is this poll just for Americans?

thaaat's right, because you think most English Morrissey fans are areseholes, right?

> Christmas, New Year 1986 - 1987

You;re not an American, LoF! Sorry, you're not welcome, apparently

StH

(me? 1991, just *after* Morrissey toured here.)

1990-Morrissey

1990, when i was fourteen and in the ninth grade.

it wasn't the smiths that i first heard, though, it was morrissey. i specifically remember "angel, angel down we go together" being the song that first struck me and made me take notice.
