I might be completely nuts but I've had a theory for a few years about the only way that the Smiths would possibly reform (maybe or maybe not with Mike Joyce). Even though it's pretty well documented that Morrissey has issues when it comes to money (lawsuits, stories of not paying people, etc.), I feel like part of the reason he has turned down any reunion offers has actually been that they've tried to throw ridiculous amounts of money at him and Johnny. While I'm sure they'd appreciate a big payday out of a reunion somewhere down the line, I think Morrissey's pride plays a big part in this. I'm sure a lot of us feel that he refuses to even entertain the thought of the Smiths reforming because it would be like admitting that his solo career has not lived up to his days with the Smiths. And I think that accepting tons of money would make him feel like he's going to be so judged as a guy who sold out for the big paycheck.
So I really think that if someone that was close enough to Morrissey and Johnny plus possibly Mike and Andy talked to them about doing some sort of one-off show that was kept very secret and hush-hush, which really never happens these days as word always leaks out, that may appeal to them. Morrissey is still passionate about music and performing and I think something like that which is not a giant reunion spectacle at a huge festival might actually appeal to him. It'd have to be kept completely unknown to practically everyone in the world and they could just come on stage as some extra band tacked on to a show at some small venue of a few hundred people or so. I'm sure this idea would still be far fetched and not likely to actually happen. But I could see the Smiths doing something like this rather than a widely publicized reunion or the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. I've had daydreams about trying to get something like this to happen myself but of course I don't know anyone even remotely close enough to any of them to make that work.
That was pretty rambling and incoherent and now you can proceed at telling me how ridiculous it is.
