Rework a Morrissey album

...For instance, take any Morrissey / Smiths LP, and re-sequence it (b-sides and outtakes are allowed provided they were recorded during or right around the same time as the chosen album) in order to make it a stronger record.

I'll go one better and add alternate singles / B-sides. I actually published an article about this in Whyte Grrrl's late, lamented Alain Whyte fanzine, No One Can Hold a Candle to You (#4).

I know it isn'ton your list but if I had chance to completely rerecord a whole album it would be Kill Uncle.

Hate the production.

Saved for b-sides:

-"Oh well, I'll never learn",
-"Bengali..", -
-"dial-a-cliché", -
-"Little man.."
-"Ordinary Boys"
-"please help the cause against.."

The only albums I feel that would seriously benefit from a 'rework' would be "Maladjusted" and the god awful "Kill Uncle".

As per the above post, I would also have reworked 'Viva' by adding the actual b-sides and unreleased material from the actual 'Viva' era, and I would certainly have left the bloody artwork alone!

Other than that, i'm quite happy with the way the rest of the albums are.

Yeah...I agree. If it sounded like the KROQ sessions, and the tracks were rearranged a bit, I think it could have been much stronger. I know that one always gets a bad rap. But there's some very good songs there.

Cool track listing. Curious -- did you leave This is Not Your Country as a b-side because it would stand out too much as the only politicized track on the album?

Like the move of Trouble further down -- could also have been a closer. Morrissey sometimes goes with a "big" finale (Speedway, Southpaw, You Know I Couldn't Last) but I thought Satan was a nice change. But in retrospect it's kind of crazy to think it was the last album closer for 7 years!

Ambitious Outsiders and Sorrow are b-sides in the true sense of the word. Kewpie, do you think there's something...kimochi warui about these tracks?

I tried to measure relative strengths and considered some equity to the different writers. I cherish This Is Not Your Country, but it was hard to fit it in. It's interesting how this version flows: Papa Jack seems stronger sandwiched between those songs and the closing trio really end it on a triple high note.

I agree with your assessment of those tracks as B-sides. I also argue that He Cried could have made a larger impact as a B-side - there is a certain power to it that gets blended out in the existing track listing. I threw in the Modern Rock Live Roy's Keen simply to have sufficient tracks. Had I my druthers, a live version of Paint a Vulgar Picture from the tour would have been nice. The Lads really did justice to that song, imo.

Cheers,
Jamie
