This is why The Smiths are the best band ever

From the "Young Guns" video:

Morrissey: "I was, I was discovered (unintelligible) by Johnny the guitarist, who just came and unearthed my one day, and insisted that we collaborate, and, I was just there, dying, and he rescued me and its been very nice"

I don't understand why there's so much contempt for Rourke. Rourke played an important part in the success of a great band. Yet he spent much of the 90s living not-very-well and even signing on the dole for a period.

Despite that, he's been generally dignified. I'm disappointed at Morrissey's latest outburst about Rourke. Who cares if he wasn't fired by the method of a postcard under a windscreen wiper? It's a fine anecdote.

I don't mean it so much for Andy as I do for Mike. I really don't like Joyce for what he put Morrissey (and his family) through. Andy is Andy, I suppose, but Joyce is just...horrible!

I think I might be rediscovering this band.

It was their mutual love of girl groups that brought them together. :)

"I would never say that we sounded at all like what you would think of a black group sounded like, far from it. We were expressing what we were, which was white, very provencial, kinda of snooty music fans I suppose, in a post punk...that's what we were."

The Smiths > Morrissey.

They're just better. Whose had a great impact on music? Undoubtedly the Smiths wouldn't be as famous without Morrissey. He was the most signature component of them. Regardless, Marr was just as if not more crucial to the band than Morrissey. Arguably Morrissey's lyrics and refelction of emotion in the Smiths is what made them legendary, but without Marr's guitar riffs and writing style the Smiths would had gone no where. Without Marr I doubt the Smiths, even if they had become famous, would had lasted. Marr was a great mediator between them and took care of most of the financial business as well as helped Street in the studio. Morrissey would record and leave. Furthermore Marr was the only guitarist, something I don't think a lot of people comprehend. He had to record up to 2 to 3 tracks of guitar, and write them himself. Think of the 80s, what was more important during that time, the way the music sounded, or what the music was saying? When Marr left the Smiths died. Morrissey was replaceable, and by saying that I do NOT mean that there could had been someone better out there, simply that at the time singing and lyrics were not as emphasized as songwriting. Their biggest hit was How Soon is Now? and that sure as hell was not because of Morrissey's lyrics. In no way am I bashing Morrissey, I love him the most obviously since I am here but for the time period, Marr was definitely more important than Morrissey, it's simply that Morrissey was what made the Smiths unique, and legendary, but Marr's what made it happen, Morrissey is what made the Smiths timeless, but Marr's what made the Smiths exist.
